West Bend Friends of Sculpture Installs The Bird' on the Downtown Riverwalk

6

City of West Bend recently issued the following announcement.

The City of West Bend installed a new sculpture donated by West Bend Friends of Sculpture to the Riverwalk. The forged stainless steel sculpture, Avis Gloriae Et Lavidis MMXVI (Bird of Glory and Praise)—lovingly known as The Bird—was created by artist Sheila Berger. The Bird is an acquisition and donation from the West Bend Friends of Sculpture to the City of West Bend. It is the newest piece of the Friends of Sculpture collection of 41 public art works displayed throughout the city.

“West Bend Friends of Sculpture is pleased to welcome the work of New York Artist Sheila Berger to the City of West Bend,” says West Bend Friends of Sculpture President Michelle Nast. “Berger spent all of 2020 designing and crafting the almost seven-foot-tall polished stainless steel robin in her Chelsea neighborhood studio.”

Friends of Sculpture worked closely with the City of West Bend to secure the Riverwalk location. A flood plain study and extensive site work were conducted in advance of the installation. West Bend Friends of Sculpture dedicates this piece to the West Bend community and visitors of the area.

“My hope is to elevate the small creatures on our planet that bring us so much joy and beauty,” said artist Sheila Berger. “The sculpture was designed with the intention of it being located along a riverbend. Downtown West Bend is the perfect perch.”
