City of West Bend recently issued the following announcement.

The City of West Bend is pleased to announce that it has secured $4M in grant funding through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). This federally-funded grant program will support safety improvements at three high-traffic intersections. HSIP funds cover 90% of the estimated project costs and require only a 10% match from the municipality. The city plans to complete more than $4.4M in improvements at a net city cost of less than $450,000. On Monday, December 20, the Board of Public Works and Common Council voted unanimously to approve State Municipal Agreements and accept the terms of the grant funding.

"Maintaining roads and infrastructure is one of our highest strategic priorities,” said Mayor Christophe E. Jenkins. “This grant program will alleviate the need to utilize significant capital improvement funds for this important work, saving local tax dollars and resulting in three much-safer intersections.”

The overall objective of HSIP is to develop and implement stand-alone safety projects designed to reduce the number and severity of crashes on all state and local streets and highways. In 2019, the City of West Bend entered into an agreement with Traffic and Design Analysis, Inc. (TADI) to perform safety screenings at various intersections throughout the city, and determine intersections that would qualify to receive funding under the HSIP program. With guidance from TADI’s analysis, City staff ranked sets of intersections in different projects. HSIP funding will address design, property acquisition, and reconstruction of the following intersections:

1. Washington Street and 7th Avenue
2. Washington Street and 18th Avenue
3. Washington Street and River Road

Earlier this year, grant funding was also secured to improve three additional intersections:

• Main Street and W. Decorah Road
• Main Street and W. Paradise Drive
• Paradise Drive and S. Silverbrook Drive
